Angels, Spirit Guides & Goddesses~ A brief Introduction
Regardless of our religious beliefs or cultural roots, I believe that we can all benefit from the possibility of Higher Beings that protect, guide and help us to travel the right path for us. Despite the fact that Angels come from Biblical realms, being described as 'God's first creation', there are alternative ways that we can view the existence of Angels in our lives, without caging them into a specific religious category. Basically I am suggesting that belief in 'Higher Forces' does not necessarily require a Christian perspective of the world. I am a Pagan, but I still believe in Angels and Spirit Guides. I call on my Guardian Angel regularly and she has never let me down! More details about Angels will be included later on in this article.
Spirit Guides are thought to be the essence of a person who has already lived on Earth centuries before, becoming highly developed in spiritual ways. They act as a link and a teacher between the life of the person on Earth and a 'Higher' realm. Some guides are said to be of Red Indian origin, as these Indians live very spiritual lives when on Earth, closely connected with Nature and the animal kingdom. Some Guides are also ancestors or people that the person knew in a previous life. Some people even claim to have Animal Guides!
The idea of spirit guides is not limited to the work of mediums or Spiritualists, but can be found in many cultures and beliefs. For example the peoples of Amazonian South America believed in ' Spirit Helpers '. These 'helpers' were typically the spirits of their ancestors or animals such as the eagle and jaguar.
You may also come across the term Shaman. To become a Shaman you had to be 'called' to the service, often there were initiations and suffering. A ceremony which involved symbolic death and resurrection, endowed the new Shaman with a new existence, forever changing him. During the initiation the new Shaman would meet and converse with spirits, learn how to go into trance, astral travel and be taught which spirits he could call upon in the future. Those who did not attain the full range of Shaman powers became 'medicine men'. Regarding their work, these peoples believed illness was the result of evil spirits entering inside people. They performed an elaborate ceremony to call out the evil spirits. Only the Shaman have the power to communicate with the spirit domain, acting much like our mediums do, as an mediator and message giver. Shaman were major figures for a tribe, often taking on many roles; teachers, poets, healers, story tellers and other functions.
Wherever our life has led us, we all have a guide, although these are generally referred to as Guardian Angels. These Angels will watch over us and try to steer us in the right direction. Perhaps you have had that `gut feeling` that made you do something or avoid doing something? Often that is your Guardian Angel communicating with you. It is still up to you to follow or reject those feelings. Many of us will go through life totally unaware of these spirit helpers, often only being to able to listen when tragedy strikes.

Silver Birch: The much loved and respected guide Silver Birch did this by speaking through the medium Maurice Barbanell. Maurice would go into trance to allow Silver Birch to address those in his circle. The words imparted by this wise and experienced guide has served many a medium an understanding of the spirit world and have been published in a number of books.
It is also believed that Angels are amongst us, seeming to be normal people who we meet every day. These are known as 'Earth Angels', strangers who spontaniously appear to lend a hand or even friends and family who give guidance or advice. Angel expert, Doreen Virtue, described an experience that she had in a supermarket one evening. She tells how the supermarket queues were extremely long and the cashier she chose had a woman helping to bag up people's shopping. Doreen noticed that she was talking with each customer as she was helping them and each customer left with a smile on their face. As she got closer, she noticed her name tag and how fitting her name was for the calming effect she was having...Serena. (This story is especially amazing to me as I read it and noticed she had the same name as me). While talking to the lady, Doreen explains that she said, ''On my planet where I come from, there is no drama, and everyone is happy.'' Although she shops at that supermarket regularly, she had never seen her before, nor has she seen her since that evening. I love that story as it suggests that Earth Angels do exist and that we are all capable of bringing joy and smiles to those around us. It doesn't cost anything to just stop and put ourselves and our needs aside sometimes.
" If you help only one soul to find itself, if you comfort only one mourner, if you heal only one sick person, then the whole of your earthly life is justified. How privileged you are to be aware of the tremendous power that is around and about you, that enfolds you, guards you, directs you and ensures that you will continue to unfold your latent divinity and the gifts which are your cherished possession." (Silver Birch).
A Goddess is a female Deity, in some cultures associated with Earth, Fertility & Motherhood, love, and the home. In other cultures, Goddesses also rule over war, death, and destruction as well as healing. Here are some of the Earth Goddesses from a variety of Cultures:
Gaia of Greek root~
A beautiful and voluptuous woman. Sometimes she is shown as half-buried in the earth. Her symbols are The earth, fruits and flowers. She is a primal mother goddess, complete in herself as she was the first deity, from whom all others sprang. But Uranus, her first creation, was lusty and cruel to Gaia. Gaia persuaded her other children to help her subdue their father. Cronus, her son, took a flint sickle and castrated his father, throwing his severed organs into the great sea. The goddess Aphrodite was then born of the mixing of the blood and foam. Gaia went on to have children with other mates.
Frigga of Celtic root~
Frigga was the goddess of love, marriage, and destiny. She was the wife of the powerful Norse god Odin. A sky goddess, responsible for weaving the clouds (and therefore for sunshine and rain and the fertility of the crops), she was also responsible for weaving the fates, as well as a 'seer', one who knew the future though she could never change it.New Year's eve, the longest night of the year, is called "Mother Night" in Northern Europe for it was in the darkness of that night that the goddess Frigga labored to give birth to Baldur who was so pleasant and 'radiant' was beloved of all the gods. Referred to as the Norse god of light or the god of the midsummer sun, celebrations of his life, death and resurrection were held at midsummer and usually involved watching the sun set and rise. His myths were immortalized in the 'Sun God' Symphony. The blessing of Frigga is still invoked for birthing women with a white candle that last burned during the winter solstice being used as a charm to ensure a safe delivery.
The Nordic Goddess Frigga is a goddess who keeps us in touch with our intuitive nature and helps us make transitions and new beginning.
This is my interpretation of Goddess Frigga. It is a mixed media mini painting done on watercolour paper block and measures 8x10.5cm
And as a Goddess of love and divination, Frigga helps keep our lives in alignment with our spiritual selves. I have designed a Resin pendant threaded onto an Organza ribbon that represents the essence of Goddess Frigga and how She can guide us in this New Year to evolve into the person we wish to be and to fulfill our resolutions and plans. This pendant can be bought in my Etsy Shop.
Maia of Roman root~
Maia is the Oscan Earth-Goddess, and an ancient Roman Goddess of springtime, warmth, and increase. She causes the plants to grow through Her gentle heat, and the month of May is probably named for Her. Her name means "She Who is Great", and is related to Oscanmais and Latin majus, both of which mean "more". She is also called Maia Maiestas, "Maia the Majestic", which is essentially a doubling of Her name to indicate Her power, as both "Maia" and "Maiestas" have their roots in latin magnus, "great or powerful". She was honored by the Romans on the 1st and 15th of May, and at the Volcanalia of August 23rd, the holiday of Her sometimes husband, the Fire-God Vulcan.
Ala of Nigerian root~
is the Ibo Fertility Goddess of the earth. The Ibo people of Nigeria call her the mother of all things, but she is both the fertile earth and the empty field after the harvest. She is present at the beginning of the cycle of life, making children grow in their mother’s womb, and she is there at the end of the cycle, to receive the souls of the dead into her own womb. Ala also gives laws to the people, emphasizing the importance of honesty and respect.
Brighid~Spring Goddess of Celtic roots
Brighid is the Pagan Spring Goddess celebrated at Imbolc, the Pagan festival, the feast day of St Brigid, an Irish festival marking the beginning of spring. Most commonly it is celebrated on 1 or 2 February in the northern hemisphere and 1 August in the southern hemisphere. These dates fall approximately halfway between the Winter Solstice 21st December and the Spring Equinox. It's a time to appreciate the magic of the land, how crops grow, and how Nature comes into blossom.
